COACH NICK

My fitness journey has been and continues to be anything but a straight line.

I struggled in my youth to connect with team sports and focused my energy instead on skateboarding (mid-80s) and snowboarding (early ‘90s). At that point, I wasn’t a gym rat or particularly athletic. In 2001, I started exploring martial arts, beginning with Danzan Ryu Jujutsu and transitioning a couple of years later to Wado Ryu Karate. Over the subsequent decade, I was fortunate to train with world-class, hard-as-nails athletes (and great friends) who helped me discover and develop my sense of discipline, commitment, and determination. I wanted to be stronger and faster just to keep up with these folks.

In 2005/6, I was introduced to CrossFit and Gym Jones. This was life-changing. It was like hearing Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for the first time when everything on the radio was glam rock. It "worked” for me and ignited a passion for fitness and nutrition that I’d never tapped into. I quickly joined up with one of the first CrossFit affiliates in Colorado (and one of the first 100 CrossFit affiliates in the country).

CrossFit, however, was just an entry point. As a career software engineer and technologist, I wanted to know how everything worked. So I immersed myself in the science of strength and conditioning and nutrition for health and performance. I took community college classes in anatomy and physiology. I attended human cadaver dissections. I chased certifications with some of the brightest minds in modern exercise science. And I read, and read, and read.

Through these experiences and relationships, I developed an ethos that has impacted me personally and professionally in the decades since. More than barbell work or macronutrient management, it’s this ethos that I’m driven to share with others. I want to be a catalyst for others to discover their own potential.
